R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (R-ALA/R-isomer) is the biologically active form of alpha-lipoic acid and has powerful antioxidant activity. (Regular Alpha Lipoic Acid contains a mixture of both isomers of ALA and is only 50% biologically active.) ALA is required by mitochondria, the energy-producing structures in cells to produce energy in the human body. The body makes enough ALA for basic metabolic functions but ALAs powerful antioxidant action occurs only with excess amounts of ALA and only in the free or unbound state (R-ALA).
